In Defense of Johns

Spectator Magazine has a column in their online archives written by an anonymous writer, a man who was sentenced to Johns' School in San Francisco. I only touched on Johns briefly in my prostitution series but I wanted to revisit these men and women.

Just as prostitutes are regularly and unfairly portrayed in a manner that flies against their reality, Johns too are given an inaccurate illustration. Usually portrayed as either brutish and abusive or whimpering and pathetic, most Johns or clients are typical men. Yes, some can be abusive and brutish the they are not the majority. Yes, some may be 'losers' but rarely is it explained that Johns that fall into that category are extremely shy and unsure how to otherwise approach a woman. Especially if said woman is beautiful. There are Johns who need male or female prostitutes to work through sexual orientation problems. Some men are indeed lonely, but why is that a crime?

Still others are men who don't want to be in a committed relationship and instead of being seen as sparing the feelings of women who want to be attached, they're portrayed as being cold. Most Johns crave professional sex. There is a difference between a woman who's had a lot of sex (usually the same kind) with the three boyfriends she had before getting married and a woman who has sex with many different men with different sexual appetites and desires. Most people prefer professionals in other aspects of life, so why not sex?

And the unseen, unheard Johns who should really be called Janes. There are female Johns (I'm going to refer to them as Janes from now on) who request the service of gigolos or whores but since women are supposed to be asexual outside of marriage or a committed monogamous relationship in this society, they are overlooked and thought to be as rare as a blue unicorn riding a unicycle.

I want to return your attention to the article link above. Every large city in the United States has one of those John Schools. Back in my sexually unenlightened days I thought this was a good idea. Having matured intellectually since then I know how such schools only make life worse for the streetwalkers and for their clients, most of whom are decent men who just want a little pussy. The goal of these schools is to harangue and intimidate arrested Johns into never procuring streetwalkers ever again. Though rare, escorts and their clients are targeted. However, I think that takes more effort than vice squads want to go through.

Law enforcement officials claim the reason Johns are arrested is to protect the prostitute by keeping her away from men who may physically harm her. As the law now stands, it is not spelled out that way as Wendy McElroy pointed out in her speech on why prostitution should be decriminalized. It's a law on economics, not on violence because, of course, assault, battery, rape, etc. is already against the law. The men who are arrested and sent to Johns' School are not the violent ones, who are rarely caught.

Continuing to arrest the majority, non-violent Johns make the streets less safe for the women working because all that's left are the Johns who are violent and have nothing left to use. Reading this article absolutely angers me for obvious and non-obvious reasons. I don't have to go over the obvious reasons for anyone who frequents Le Grand Salon. However, the non-obvious reasons concerns my non-sexual political activism.

How much money does my city, Chicago, waste on measures like these? How many millions that could go to funding schools, after-school programs, neighborhood beautification programs, community centers, etc? Could it be at all possible for police departments around the country actually clean up the streets of violent criminals who endanger the whole lot of us? Neh, the criminals have guns and heaven forbid a police officer's vest actually get some action in the field.

As this anonymous John also mentions, the scores of women who are paraded in front of the Johns for the guilt trip portion of the class. The women who are always held up to be the paragon of the sex industry, ergo the industry needs to go. I agree with Anon-John when he said those women clearly shouldn't have been working in the sex industry. Very few are trafficked women, instead these are held there by economic reasons...which, actually, is why anybody has a job. The ones who whore to support drug habits are those who need counseling and certainly are not restricted to the sex industry.

In any case, the Johns' School is a waste of money for its alleged purpose. Considering how situations for whores and Johns are only made worse thanks to measures like these I doubt law enforcement truly wants to help anybody at all.

As a former John (have what I need now) I thank you. I must admit that one of the major attractions is the variety. It isn't just the size, shape, ethnicity, age, and degree of ability; but the suprises such as the cute little nubian hooker that turned out to be a TS in transition. To paraphrase Forrest Gump "being a John is like opening a box of chocholates; sometimes they have cherries and sometimes they have nuts", its up to you whether to pay and play. I was never dissatisfied with what I paid for, though there was that time in the cemetary that the cops interrupted the enjoyment. But I have told you about that

Erm... I'm going to have to plead ignorance as a result of having been raised in Utah, it seems. I have absolutely no idea what a school of Johns is.

Looks like I've got some more research and learning to do. ;)

Here's the link to the article, bro: http://www.spectator.net/1202/pages/1202_john_school.html

I could've sworn I included it in the main article, but I didn't, so I'm editing it in for future reference.

Jesus Horatio Christ! That's fucking ridiculous!

Gotta' admit, though; it makes a hell of a point to the rest of the nation that the state with some of the least problems is the one best known for its culture of gambling and legalized prostitution.

Never really had a desire to live in Nevada until now.

You know, I've always wondered what the H. stood for and now I know. :P

Anyway, yeah, far too much money is wasted on the Johns' School when those men in there aren't guilty of anything more than wanting sex. Very few of the violent ones are caught then when they are they're treated with kid-gloves because of who their victims are.
